CHOOSING YOUR STAFF
Tradition states that a staff should come from the floor to somewhere between the chin and nose. The 5 foot staff is a decent standard, starting out. However, the option is available to make your own staff. There are several good videos available for this practice until we can create a step-by-step tutorial specifically for the Jedi Budo Arts.
We teach the use of the 5 foot staff, rather than the 6 foot variant, because a 5 foot pole is far more likely to be found in the everyday world, and while the Jedi Staff Form is meant to be a meditative exercise, the movements are all designed to be used defensively.
CREATING YOUR OWN STAFF
This is a very personal, yet totally optional step for anyone training in the Jedi Staff Form. The process of carving a staff with little more than your bare hands is extremely rewarding, but there are some people who just don’t have the love for carving wood, which is totally fine. A purchased staff works just as well, even a dowel rod is a good place to start the journey.
To take your training to that next level, though, I personally recommend attempting this process, at least once. It offers the chance for connection to the Force in the land, and in the wood, as you help to strip away that which is unneeded to reveal this tool, this weapon, this spiritual companion.
