Lesson 4: Ready Positions

You don’t have access to this lesson

You must first complete Jedi Budo Arts: Basics before taking this course.

We can stand on our feet by using the stances taught in the previous course, and we can properly grip the staff. Now, we need to combine the two into positions that will help with the moving drills offered later in this program.

Open Formal

The Open Formal Position is the first of the ritualized movements within the Jedi Staff Form. This is done as a centering, with a gentle, yet deep in breath as the left hand comes up from the side to the position shown. The out-breath is performed with the first move of the drill or pattern, as a point of focus for the movement.

Closed Formal

The Closed Formal Position is the second ritualized point in the Jedi Staff Form. This this done after the ending of any drills of patterns. An in-breath is taken as the staff is placed tucked behind the arm, and the out-breath comes with the pressing down of the left hand.

Closed Tucked

The Closed Tucked Position is often used as a transition from the Open Formal into some moving drills.

Open Tucked

Similar to the Closed Tucked, the Open Tucked Position is sometimes used as a ready position for some moving drills.

Front Ready

The Front Ready Position is used most often in two-person drills (as the planned aggressor), but can be found as a transitionary point within the moving drills and patterns.

Side Ready

The Side Ready Position is used most often in two-person drills (as the planned defender), but can be found as a transitionary point within the moving drills and patterns.

Back Mounted

Unconventional it may be, the Back Mounted Position is used when approached by more than one aggressor, or as both a recovery and a lead up to a large one-handed arching swing.

Planted

The Planted Position is one of non-aggressive readiness. The weapon is far enough away to be deployed in several directions. It transitions nicely from a situation where one is using a staff as a walking stick or hiking pole.
